Abstract
1311565 Extracting coffee solubles from coffee beans GRASSO'S KONINKLIJKE MACHINFABRIEKEN NV 19 April 1971 [26 June 1970 27 Jan 1971] 31095/70 and 3331/71 Heading A4E [Also in Division B1] In a purification or leaching column which is enclosed at one end by a piston 3 capable of forming and advancing a compacted bed of solid particles towards a delivery end of the column, at which it is washed and removed, the piston has a conduit 6 for supplying a suspension and a separate conduit 7 for discharging the liquid phase. As shown, conduits 6 and 7 open at opposite sides of a filter 5 so that, after closing valve 13, upward motion of the piston separates the solid particles and discharges the liquid phase through the open valve 9. The piston is driven by double-acting ram 4 and for its return stroke, the positions of valves 9 and 13 are reversed. When next to extract substantially all the coffe solubles from ground roasted coffee beans, the top of the column is modified, Fig. 4, the slice off layers of the compacted bed of coffee grounds as it protrudes from cylinder 1. A knife 26 is operated by a ram 27 and its lost-motion connection with a member 29 enables the latter to slide the sliced layer off the blade 26 and allow it to fall through hole 28. Hot water is supplied through perforated disc 25.
