Abstract

1311457 Packages; portable containers D E PANOZ 1 Nov 1971 [5 Nov 1970] 50683/71 Headings B8C and B8D [Also in Division A5] A container for clinical swabs comprises a tube 1 of flexible plastics material divided by a cotton-wool plug 2 into two chambers, the swollen chamber being sealed and containing a glass ampoule 4 which contains sterile nutrient broth, and the larger chamber having a removable snap-on plastics closure 7 and being suitable for containing a clinical swab 3. When the swab has been used to collect a sample the ampoule 3 is broken by squeezing or flexing the tube 1 to release its contents, which permeate through the plug 2 and preserve or nourish the sample on the swab. Instead of a glass ampoule' a frangible membrane (9) may confine the nutrient.
