Abstract

1310936 Photopolymerisable materials using organic halogen compounds. MINNESOTA MINING & MFG CO 17 March 1970 12869/70 Heading G2C [Also in Division C3] A photopolymerisable material comprises a self-supporting film of a binder and the vinyl ether and organic halogen specified below or a support coated with a layer comprising a solid polymerisable vinyl ether and an organic halogen which on exposure produces free radicals, the bond dissociation energy of the carbon-halogen bond being between 40 and 70 kilogram calories per mol and the halogen compound being inert with the vinyl ether in the absence of light and being the sole sensitizer or admixed with a xanthene, thiazole, polymethine or acridine dye, or with P-dimethylamino -benzal (phenyl) pyrezolone, 7-dimethylamine - 4-methyl coumarin, 2-diethylamino - 9-fluorenone, 3, 3'-diethyl oxa carbocyanine iodide or p-dimethylamino styrylquinoline. This material is imagewise exposed and developed by (i) transferring the unexposed areas to a receptor sheet whilst heating and powder developing the transferred areas (ii) removing the unexposed areas with a solvent to produce a printing plate if a hydrophilic support is used (iii) if the material is originally opaque, heating to render the exposed areas transparent.
