Abstract
1310736 Extrusion coating of conductors ANACONDA WIRE & CABLE CO 19 Aug 1970 39927/70 Heading B5A [Also in Division H1] A single or multiple strand copper, brass, or bronze conductor 11, e.g. for use at 2000 V. and above, is drawn by a capstan 13 through an extruder 14, wherein a coating of oxygenimpervious polymeric semi-conductive shielding is applied which acts to prevent oxidation of the conductor 11 as it is heated to between 250 F. and 550 F., during passage through an oven or induction coil 18, prior to being drawn through an extruder 19 wherein a polymeric insulating coating is applied. The semi-conductive shielding may comprise a silicone composition, or an olefinic composition, e.g. polyethylene with ethylene propylene copolymer rubber and conducting carbon black, and the insulating coating may comprise a vulcanizable polyethylene when the coated conductor 11 is drawn from the extruder 19 through a vulcanizing tube 21 (where vulcanizing is assisted by the heat of the conductor 11) which terminates in a cooling section.
