Abstract
1310283 Hydrocracking SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ NV 12 June 1970 28603/70 Heading C5E Carbonaceous material is cracked at elevated temperature and pressure in the presence of H 2 with a continuous phase of catalyst containing at least one of the following halides:-ZnCl 2 , ZnBr 2 , ZnI 2 ; antimony chloride, bromide or iodide; bismuth chloride or bromide; tin bromide; titanium iodide; arsenic bromide or iodide; HgBr 2 ; HgI 2 and gallium bromide with the proviso that when a zinc halide is used a modifying salt which lowers hydrocarbon solubility in the molten halide is additionally employed. The carbonaceous material may comprise heavy hydrocarbons, heavy petroleum fractions, petroleum residues, tars, coal and/or liquid products derived from coal, tar sand and/or shale. A mineral acid, e.g. H 2 SO 4 , pyrophosphoric acid or a hydrogen halide corresponding to the halogen of the metal halide, may also be present. The modifying salt for zinc halides may be an alkali metal halide. The continuous phase may be maintained at 200- 550‹ C. and under a H 2 partial pressure of at least 17-5 atmospheres.
