Abstract

1310181 Machinery guards M KOMORI 13 March 1970 [24 March 1969 10 Sept 1969] 12254/70 Heading F2J Safety apparatus for a press comprises a guard G supported by a parallel lift assembly of interconnected links 28, 29, 31, 32, 34, 36 and 37, springs 25, 39 which, on release of a latch L, urge the assembly into a guarding position, and a link 27 connected to link 28 and adapted to be moved to the left in order to move the guard to its non-guarding position. A crank member 24 is pivotally mounted on a pivot pin 26 and has one arm attached to the link 27 and the other arm 23 engaged by a lever 20 which is pivotally mounted on an axle 19. One end of the lever 20 is adapted to be engaged by latch L, which is controlled by a solenoid 8, and the other end of the lever 20 is adapted to engage a pivotally mounted hook 21 carried by a pivotally mounted plate 10 to which is connected a cable 13 connected to the operating clutch of a worm W which effects movement of the press ram. On actuation of a switch H, solenoid 8 releases lever 20, thereby causing the guard G to be moved to its guarding position, and simultaneously the ram clutch is actuated. When the ram ascends, the cable 13 rises and causes the hook 21 to rotate the lever 20 clockwise, thereby causing descent of the guard G and re-engagement of the lever 20 by the latch L. If it is required to move the guard downwardly into a guarding position, link 27 is connected to crank member 24 in the manner shown in Fig. 8. The latch mechanism L may be replaced by a pump 41 and piston 42, the link 27 being coupled to the piston 42, as shown in Fig. 9. In another modification, the gate is operated electrically by solenoids 48, 49, and a pantograph-type linkage is employed, Fig. 10. The solenoids may be replaced by a latch mechanism similar to that shown in Fig. 1. In a modification shown in Fig. 17, a guard G is carried by parallel bars 106a, 106b and is moved to its guarding position by a pneumatic motor 109. A spring assists the return of the guard to its former position. A lever 115 operates a switch 119 controlling movement of the ram. Micro-switches may be associated with a drive shaft so that should the ram accidentally begin to fall, the gate will be raised immediately. In a further modification, a parallel bar type gate is controlled by a solenoid operated latch. Fig. 23 shows an embodiment in which a reversible motor 140 drives a rotary arm 142 coupled to a pivot block 105b.
