Abstract

1309939 Oil seals; shock-absorbers; springs F M ALLINQUANT and J G ALLINQUANT 22 Oct 1970 [22 Oct 1969] 50125/70 Headings F2B and F2S A shock-absorber comprises an elastomeric sealing washer 10 which is compressed by a frusto-conical portion 18a of a metal spring 18 to cause it to fit snugly inside a seating formed in the shock-absorber outer casing and against the rod 4 at the point of emergence of the rod from the shock-absorber, the frusto-conical portion of the spring being connected by an intermediate portion to a support portion 18b. Preferably, the washer 10 has sealing lips 11a of smaller diameter than the rod, the diameter of each lip becoming smaller towards the outside of the casing. The spring 10 may be formed with spring- fingers 18b; alternatively, the spring may be of U-section and slotted to provide spring-fingers. The shock-absorber is of the double tube type, the hydraulic fluid completely filling the internal tube 1 and partially filling the annular space 8 between the tubes. A valved partition 7 permits the flow of hydraulic fluid between the tubes to compensate for the volume of the rod.
