1309873 Flame resistant fabrics MONSANTO CO 14 May 1971 [15 May 1970] 14910/71 Headings D1P and D1R [Also in Division C3] Fabrics may be bonded and rendered flame resistant by impregnating with compositions comprising (A) a copolymer of 5 to 69.9 weight per cent ethylene, 30 to 94.5 weight per cent vinyl chloride and 0.1 to 10 weight per cent of a polar monomer at least a part of which is acrylamide, or a derivative of such a copolymer formed by at least partial hydrolysis of the amide groups, and (B) an ammonium polyphosphate. The optional polar monomers may be acrylonitrile, N-alkylacrylamides, methacrylamide or derivatives, acrylic, methacrylic, maleic, fumaric, itaconic, aconitic and citraconic acids, salts and esters, and vinyl esters of carboxylic and sulphonic acids. Preferred ammonium polyphosphates are of formula H( n-m ) +2 (NH 4 ) m P n O 3n+1 where n is greater than 10, m/n has an average value of 0.7 to 1.1 and m + n is not greater than 2. Other flame retardants, e.g. halogen-containing, antimony and boron compounds and phosphonate compounds such as diethyl and bis(#-chlorethyl) N,N-diethanolaminomethyl phosphonates; and plasticisers, e.g. phosphate esters, may also be present. In Example 4 non-woven fabrics of cellulose and nylon fibres (75:25) are bonded and rendered flame resistant by impregnating with aqueous dispersions of ethylene/vinyl chloride/acrylamide copolymers and an ammonium polyphosphate containing 30.2 weight per cent P and having a N/P ratio of about 0.9.
