Abstract

1309761 Peak detector SMITHS INDUSTRIES Ltd 15 May 1970 [11 April 1969] 18827/69 Heading G4H In an electrical circuit for detecting the maximum height of a peak in an input signal, the analogue input signal is converted to a signal whose frequency is proportional to the height of the input signal by a unit 10. This signal is fed to binary counters 12 and 14 via AND gates 11 and 13. Timing circuit 15 opens AND gate 11 for fixed periods so that counter 12 counts the number of pulses generated by unit 10 in a fixed period. The value on counter 12 is compared with the value on counter 14 by a comparator 16, and AND gate 13 is held open by the output of comparator 16 provided the count on counter 12 is greater than the count on counter 14. In this way counter 14 holds the maximum value of the signal observed at a given time. A level detector 17, is set to operate read out unit 19, when the counter 12 registers a value of say 25 per cent of the expected peak height. The inhibit gate 18 is held closed however unless the signal being measured is falling. Thus read out only occurs when the input signal has fallen to 25 per cent of the expected peak signal after the peak has been measured.
