Abstract

1309380 Welding by pressure GENERAL MOTORS CORP 8 July 1971 [21 Oct 1970] 32119/71 Heading B3R [Also in Division E1] A compressible sheet for use as a pressuretransmitting cushion in a diffusion bonding process has relieved and land areas at both sides of the sheet, the land areas at one side being staggered from those at the other side and being connected therewith by web portions which are capable of deflecting elastically or plastically when pressure is applied to the sheet. The land areas may be in the form of ridges 15, 16 (Fig. 4) or discrete circular bosses (Figs. 2, 3, not shown) and the sheet may be formed by photo-etching predetermined areas of both surfaces of a plain sheet of material of the required thickness distribution. The sheet, which may be ground to the required thickness and surface finish prior to the photo-etching step, may taper in thickness. A sheet 7 of "Hastelloy X" (Registered Trade Mark) is used as a pressure-transmitting cushion between dies 4, 6 in a diffusion bonding process in which overlapped laminµ 2 are mounted on a solid former 3 and are bonded at high temperature and under vacuum or inert atmosphere to form a rigid unitary structure of airfoil section. A parting agent may be applied to one surface of the pressure-transmitting sheet 7 to prevent bonding to the workpieces.
