Abstract
1309321 Hydrophobic starch ethers SCHOLTEN-HONIG RESEARCH NV 13 July 1971 [14 July 1970] 33992/70 Heading C3U Hydrophobic starch ethers having a degree of substitution of at least 0À1 (e.g. 0À28) are produced by etherifying granular starch with 0À16 to 2À0 moles of alkyl halide, alicyclic halide or aralkyl halide per mole of starch in the presence of up to 0À4 moles of alkali hydroxide per mole of starch in an aqueous suspension containing 40 to 49 parts by weight of sodium sulphate or potassium chloride per 100 parts by weight of water. Etherifying agents: C 3 -C 12 alkyl halides such as propyl, isopropyl, butyl, amyl, allyl, methallyl and propargyl chloride, alicyclic halides containing 6 to 12 carbon atoms such as 2-cyclohexenyl chloride, and aralkyl halides containing an araliphatic group of 7 to 12 carbon atoms such as benzyl, p-halobenzyl and o-halo-benzyl chloride, and the corresponding bromides and iodides. Starches: corn, waxy maize, high amylose maize, potato, sago, wheat, tapioca and rice. A water miscible solvent, emulsifying agent (sodium lauryl sulphate) and anti-foaming agent may be included in the suspension.
