Abstract
1309100 Moulding rubber rolls RAYBESTOS-MANHATTAN Inc 19 April 1971 [26 Aug 1970] 24991/71 Heading B5A [Also in Division B6] Articles such as rubber rolls are moulded using a mould with end sections having openings therethrough, the material being fed through an opening in one end section until it fills the mould cavity and exudes through an opening in the other end section, the mould then being sealed by closed end caps to prevent bleeding and the material being cured, e.g. by heating. A fuser roll for a xerographic copier is made by inserting a steel core 12 into a mould body 40 having end sections which locate the ends of the core and through which holes 68, 70 pass. One end section is secured by an apertured cap 60 whilst the other is secured by an inlet extension 77 which connects to a screw-injector which feeds rubber into the mould under pressure. The end sections may also contain recesses 84 to receive the ends of a sleeve 16 which may be of a fluorocarbon polymer. The injected material 14 presses the sleeve 16 against the inner wall of the mould body as it fills the annular cavity between the core and the mould and then the excess exudes through the openings 68 and 80. The cap 60 is then removed and replaced by a closed cap (88, Fig. 4, not shown) to block that end. If desired, pressure within the mould may be increased by further operation of the injector feed. The feed end is then uncoupled at 39 and a closed end cap screwed on here. The assembly may then be placed in an autoclave to cure the article and it is stated that pressures of 20,000 to 30,000 lbs. per sq. inch may be achieved by this method, dimensions and details being given. The rubber may be, e.g., neoprene, silicone rubber or rubber compounds. The screw-feed apparatus may be heated or cooled by fluid supplied through pipes 34, 36 (Fig. 2, not shown).
