Abstract

1309087 Thermoplastic polymer foams IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 20 Oct 1970 [18 Nov 1969] 56404/69 Heading C3C A foam is made by heating a thermoplastic polymer above its melting point with a blowing agent comprising a heterocyclic compound having a carboxyl group directly attached to the heterocyclic ring which decarboxylates in the presence of the molten polymer. The polymer may be a polyamide, polyolefine or polymethacrylate or a copolymer of ethylene, 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate and methyl methacrylate. The foaming may be carried out in the presence of a non-ionic surfactant, e.g. a condensate of a C 10-20 alkanol or C 10-20 alkylamine with up to 5 moles of an alkylene oxide. The blowing agent may be imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylic acid, purazole-(3 or 4),5-dicarboxylic acid, furan-tetracarboxylic acid, pyrazole-3,4,5-tricarboxylic acid or 1,2,3-triazole-4,5-dicarboxylic acid.
