Abstract

1308812 Mounting for optical fibres RANK ORGANISATION Ltd 28 May 1971 [1 July 1970] 31791/70 Heading G2J [Also in Division E2] A device for sampling the light intensity at a chosen point of a light source or image comprises a support body 1, a scanning arm 2 mounted, as in gimbal 3, permitting universal swinging movement of the arm 2, a linear abutment 10 mounted on the body, means urging the arm to swing into contact with the abutment which permits the arm to swing along and in contact with the abutment, a scanning member 15 mounted on the arm 2 by a connection permitting universal movement of the member relative to the arm, a guide surface 23 for the scanning member, and a flexible light guide mounted in the member so that the end face is exposed. The other end of the light guide may be connected to a photomultiplier. The light guide may be a single clad optical fibre, or may be a multi-filament bundle, one fibre, preferably the central one, being led out of the bundle to a photo-multiplier, the rest leading to a magnifying eyepiece for visual observation. Linear abutment 10 may be an eccentrically mounted cylinder. The end cap 8 may be scribed with a scale to indicate the position of the arm. This device may also be used to project a spot of light into the optical system of slide or film projector.
