1308669 Photo-electric measurement THOMSON C S F 25 Nov 1970 [2 Dec 1969] 56164/70 Heading G1A In an arrangement for measuring the distance between a plane 5, Fig. 3, and a reference point, the focal point of a light beam focused by a lens 4 is oscillated between points F 1 and F 2 on the axis of the beam and the signal developed by photo detector 8 in response to the passage through a slit 7 of light reflected by the surface is fed to a synchronous detector 10 together with a signal from a generator 11 which controls the movement of the focal point, the output of the synchronous detector being a measure of distance. The focal point may be oscillated by a piezo electric crystal, or by a fluid lens in which a standing wave is created by an acoustic transducer, or a system lens may be moved axially on a mechanical transducer.
