Abstract

1308649 Automatic position control ARMCO STEEL CORP 5 June 1970 27247/70 Heading G3R [Also in Division H4] A method of sewing the position of the edge of a moving strip comprising the steps of beaming sonic energy across a predetermined path of the edge from a transmitter to a receiver capable of producing fluidic signals and causing fluidic signals generated by variations in said energy due to displacement of the strip to effect relative corrective movement to restore said strip edge to said predetermined path. A finishing process, Fig. 1 (not shown), comprises passing a steel strip through a bath of molten metal and thereafter subjecting the coating to air or steam from air knives on each surface to smooth the coating. The air knives 3 have vanes 6 at each edge of the strip 1 in order to increase the wiping effect. The vanes 6 are mounted on a slide 9 movable along a rod 10. The slide 9 is fixed to a second slide 17 which carries an ultrasonic whistle 13 fixed to a bracket 16. Air from conduit 26 excites the whistle 13 and the vibrations are detected by "fluidic car" 14 which is also fixed to bracket 16. Deviation of the strip 1 edge from its desired position causes a change in the low-pressure pneumatic output signal through conduit 29. The signal is converted to an electrical signal and used to drive screw 21 through shaft 25 and gearbox 24. Screw 21 moves nut 22 thus adjusting the slides 9, 17 and re-establishing the correct position of the vanes 6 relative to the strip 1 edge. The strip may be allowed to move within a predetermined zone one eighth of an inch wide before correction takes place. The zone is divided into two equal strips by the predetermined edge path and the edge is corrected until it lies in the remote strip from the error zone into which it has strayed, Fig. 3 (not shown).
