Abstract

1308614 Gelled fertilizers FISONS Ltd 1 June 1970 [15 July 1969] 35644/69 Heading C1B A fertilizer composition in the form of a gel comprises an aqueous fertilizer composition, e.g. a composition containing ammonium nitrate, sulphate and phosphates, potassium nitrate, sulphates, phosphates and chloride or urea, which compounds must be compatible in aqueous solution, and a water-soluble gelling agent for the fertilizer composition. The gelling agent must be compatible with the aqueous fertilizer composition and may be, for example, gelatine, albumin, casein, agar agar, sodium alginate, zein, hydrolysed cellulose esters and hydrophilic vinyl polymers and copolymers such as polyvinyl alcohol and partially hydrolysed polyvinyl acetate. Two or more gelling agents may be used if required. Liquid fertilizer compositions may be prepared by dissolving the gels, which may be cast or moulded into any desired shape or introduced into a dispenser from which the gel may be squeezed in a ribbon, in a solvent which may be water or an aqueous solution containing fertilizer salts. The aqueous fertilizer composition may contain trace elements or compounds (e.g. those of Mg, Cu, Fe, Mo) and chelating agents, (e.g. ethylenediaminetetra-acetic acid) and dyes. Preferably 1-30% of the gelling agent is employed in the gel.
