Abstract
1308207 Controlling friction clutches L SCHULER GmbH 24 July 1970 [24 July 1969] 35990/70 Headings F2F and F2L A friction clutch for a press is engaged by a compressed air servo 1, 35, Fig. 1, against compression springs 36, the compressed air being delivered from a reservoir 30 via a manual valve 31 and a check valve 14 in parallel with a choke 12, and the check valve being closed by actuating means, e.g. an electromagnet controlled by an electric switch 39 actuated by a rod 37 fast with the piston 35 to close the switch 39 and valve 14 to restrict the flow of compressed air to the clutch-apply servo and hence cushion engagement of the clutch. When the clutch is fully engaged, the valve 14 is again opened. As shown in Fig. 2, the switch body 40 is mounted on a slide 58 itself mounted by a friction ratchet 56 on a bolt 41 fast with the cylinder 1. The slide is self-adjusting for clutch wear so that the switch actuating member 38 is always depressed a predetermined distance K by rod 37 on engaging the clutch. The piston 35 carries bolts 55 on which are mounted the compression springs 36. The piston acts on a thrust plate 47 to urge a driven plate 50 against a flywheel 54. Again, as shown in dash-dot lines on Fig. 2, the rod 37 and switch are replaced by a rod 60 on the thrust plate 47 and a switch 61 on the piston 35, or vice versa. A compression spring 63 urges the piston and plate 47 apart to take-up the play between the piston and a ring 48 fast with the plate 47. Again, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), in a spring-applied, compressed-air released friction brake, cushioned engagement of the brake is provided by situating the choke (74) and the piston-controlled check valve (77) in the air exhaust line.
