Abstract

1308042 p-Aminophenol CONSTRUCTORS JOHN BROWN Ltd 28 May 1970 [28 May 1969] 27058/69 Heading C2C [Also in Division C7] p-Aminophenol and derivatives thereof are obtained by electrolytic reduction of nitrobenzene at a particulate electrode maintained at a cathode potential less negative than -0À40 V. with respect to a saturated calomel electrode, in an acidic medium at a temperature in the range 60-150‹ C. p-Acetamidophenol may be obtained if acetic acid is used as the acidic medium. Other specified acidic media are H 2 SO 4 , HCl, H 3 PO 4 or HClO 4 . An electrolytic cell for carrying out the process of the invention is described.
