Abstract

1307926 Mixing apparatus G PILZ [trading as MASCHINENFABRIK J S PETZHOLDT] 22 May 1970 24972/70 Heading B1C Viscous or pasty material is mixed by causing it to run down the wall of a vertical cylindrical container 1, while being subjected to shear by rotating discs 3 which project into the layer of material. The discs may have periperal surfaces of part-conical form (Fig. 2, not shown), or knurled or formed with indentations (Figs. 6 and 5 respectively, not shown). The knurling could be inclined to propel the material axially by screw action, or, alternate knurls may be inclined in opposite directions merely to increase the mixing effect. The discs or some of them, may be replaced by bodies with rollers contacting the material (Fig. 7, not shown). The material is withdrawn from the container by a pump 9. A vacuum pump may be connected at 8, some of the lower discs 3' being perforated at 10 to allow the space above the lowest disc to be evacuated. The container may be jacketed for heating and cooling purposes, and the jacket may be subdivided to allow the temperature variation along the container to be controlled. The container wall may also have grooved inserts (Fig. 8, not shown) adjacent the rotary discs.
