Abstract

1307912 Heart pacemakers AMERICAN OPTICAL CORP 26 March 1970 [26 March 1969] 14926/70 Heading A5R [Also in Division H3] A heart pacemaker comprises an electrode E3 for connection to a patient's heart for atrial stimulation, an electrode El for connection to the heart for ventricular stimulation, means for detecting the beating of the heart, means for generating an electrical stimulus on electrode E3 following a first predetermined time interval after the detection of the last beating of the heart, and means for generating an electrical stimulus on electrode El following a second predetermined time interval after the detection of the last beating of the heart. A capacitor 57, Fig. 1, charges via variable resistors 35 and 37 until, after the second time interval of about 800 m. sec., it reaches a voltage at which transistors T7 and T8 conduct, discharging capacitor 57 therethrough and causing a transistor T9 to conduct to produce a ventricular stimulating impulse between electrodes El and E2 due to discharge of a capacitor 65. Similarly, after the first time interval of about 600 m. sec., an atrial stimulating impulse is produced between electrodes E2 and E3 due to discharge of a capacitor 65', Fig. 3. A ventricular contraction produces a signal on electrode El, corresponding to the E.C.G. R wave, which is applied to transistor Tl which then causes transistors T6 and T6' to conduct to discharge capacitors 57 and 57' respectively, thus preventing application of pulses to electrodes El and E3 if the R wave occurs before the end of the first time interval, atrial stimulation occurring and ventricular stimulation being prevented if the R wave occurs after the end of the first time interval but before the end of the second time interval. The heartbeat detection circuit is prevented from operating during atrial stimulation by a normallyconducting FET transistor 92, since when an atrial stimulating pulse is applied to electrode E3 this pulse also charges a capacitor 93 via a diode 95 causing transistor 92 to turn-off for a period corresponding to the duration of the atrial pulse plus a short period dependent on the time-constant of the capacitor 93 and resistor 94 circuit. Part of the circuit comprising transistors T3, T4 and T5 prevents conduction of transistors T6 and T6' in the presence of noise signals in a manner disclosed in Specification 1266907.
