Abstract
1378065 Heart pacemakers AMERICAN OPTICAL CORP 20 Nov 1972 [19 Nov 1971] 53593/72 Heading A5R A demand pacer comprises means for continuously monitoring the heart of a patient to provide a signal indicative of the average natural heart-beat rate of the patient and means responsive to the signal for providing a stimulation impulse to the patient when an interval corresponding to the average natural heart-beat rate is exceeded. A naturallyoccurring heart beat is detected by heart-beat detector 45 which provides an input to rate control 46 through OR-gate 70 and resets the timing circuitry in control 46 with each natural heart beat. Natural heart beats cause multivibrator 40 to provide rectangularly-shaped pulses which are averaged by capacitor 26 and resistor 27. A further capacitor 22 and resistor 23 are connected to capacitor 26 through diode 24. Capacitor 22 is also connected via diode 21 with zener diode 20 the voltage of which is selected to provide a desired minimum frequency of oscillator 41 which controls a stimulating pulse generator 42. Due to the opposed diodes 21, 24 the voltage on capacitor 22 rises to the larger of the voltage on capacitor 26, which is indicative of natural heart-beat rate, and breakdown voltage of zener diode 20. If the heart fails, capacitor 26 discharges through resistor 23. The voltage on capacitor 22 is fed to buffer amplifier, comprising transistor 16 and resistors 17, 18, providing a control voltage for oscillator 41 which comprises resistor 15, capacitor 14, transistor 13 and resistors 10-12. When the voltage on capacitor 14 reaches that established by resistors 10, 11, transistor 13 conducts and capacitor 14 discharges to pulse generator 42 which stimulates the heart. Capacitor 14 is also in parallel with the collector-emitter of transistor 28 which is turned on via OR-gate 70 by natural or stimulated heart beats, so that when a natural heart beat occurs capacitor 14 discharges before the voltage or it reaches the threshold value determined by resistors 10, 11 so that the heart is not stimulated. Pulse generator 42 also provides an input for blanking circuitry 44 to prevent detection of stimulated heart beats by detector 45.
