Abstract

Planes, construction of; balancing.-The front part of the supporting-plane of an aeroplane is made flexible within limits in relation to its main part so that the camber of the plane varies to counteract the travel of the centre of pressure as the incidence varies. Fig. 4 shows a plane in which the leading edge a is supported by springs b extending from the main spar y or from the ribs z. Stops e, which mav be adjusted during flight, limit the movement of the spring. The fabric of the forward part is supported by flexible members c, d extending from the ribs, the member d being such that it becomes more concave with upward pressure, and less concave and ultimately convex under downward pressure.
