Abstract

1307595 Strengthened glass OWENSILLINOIS Inc 28 April 1970 20277/70 Heading C1M A glass comprising (weight per cent, to an extent of at least 90% of the glass) where (Na 2 O + ZnO) # 20, where ZnO # RO, and where is 0À5-1À5, the balance, if any, of the glass consisting of other compatible constituents, is strengthened by replacement of Na ions in the glass by K ions from an external source, at an elevated temperature below its softening point, so as to form a surface compressive stress layer of depth at least 10 microns. The glass may include minor amounts of P 2 O 5 , ZrO 2 , B 2 O 3 or TiO 2 . The strengthening treatment may be carried out using a solid or molten exchange medium, which may include KCl, KNO 3 or K 2 SO 4 or mixtures thereof, at 380-1000‹ F.
