Abstract

1307543 Reducing coke formation in tubular cracking ESSO RESEARCH & ENG CO 21 May 1970 24629/70 Heading C5E In the production of unsaturated hydrocarbons, e.g. ethylene and butadiene by thermal cracking of hydrocarbon feed initially containing arsenic in a tubular furnace in the presence of steam, the arsenic content of the feed is substantially reduced before the cracking, thus reducing coke formation found to be enhanced by the presence of arsenic. Arsenic reduction may be effected by any of the following methods: (1) treatment with a basic alkali metal compound or alkaline earth metal compound, either in solution, or as a solid, or on a suitable support; (2) treatment with a salt of copper or other metal lower than copper in the electromotive series, e.g. Hg, Ag, Pd, Pt or Ag, preferably composited with a porous support, e.g. kieselguhr, silica gel, alumina, magnesia, silica, or clays; (3) treatment with nitrogen compounds, either as such or in solution, e.g. aqueous NH 3 , hydrazine, amines, alkanolamines, polyalkylene polyamines or amides; (4) treatment with an acid impregnated support, e.g. H 2 SO 4 , H 3 PO 4 or HNO 3 on kieselguhr, clays, diatomaceous earth or silica gel, and (5) treatment with activated charcoal.
