Abstract

1307355 Polymeric dispersions / solutions PLASTICS COATING RESEARCH CO 23 Feb 1970 [10 Feb 1969] 7128/69 Heading C3P A coating composition comprises a synthetic thermoplastic polymer and one or more solvent/ diluents, a part of the thermoplastic polymer being dissolved in the solvent/diluent and the remainder of the thermoplastic polymer being in finely divided form and dispersed in the solvent/diluent. The composition may be prepared by (i) dissolving the polymer in a solvent in which it has only a limited solubility to form a saturated solution and dispersing further polymer therein; (ii) dissolving a portion of the polymer in a latent solvent therefor, returning the solution to normal conditions and dispersing further polymer in the resultant solution; or (iii) dissolving the polymer in a primary solvent, mixing the resultant solution with a secondary solvent which is not normally a solvent for the polymer, is miscible with the primary solvent and has a higher boiling point than the primary solvent; distilling off the lower boiling primary solvent from the mixture to give a solution of the polymer in the secondary solvent; and dispersing further polymer in the resultant solution. In a modification of the composition, the polymer in solution is a modified polymer derived from the polymer in the disperse phase by physical or chemical modification such that it is rendered soluble in the solvent. In the examples the compositions comprise polyethylene, trichloroethylene, post-chlorinated polyethylene, methyl ethyl ketone, polyvinyl chloride, acetone, polyvinyl fluoride, dimethyl formamide, dibutyl phthalate, polytetrafluoroethylene and carbon black. Metal coupons are coated with the compositions.
