Abstract

1390100 Polymer compositions IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 13 Aug 1973 [21 Aug 1972] 38894/72 Heading C3P Particulate intimate mixtures of thermoplastics materials and additives such that, on immersion in a liquid in which neither thermoplastics material nor additive is soluble, less than 10 weight per cent of the additive separates from the mixture, may be prepared by subjecting the particles of thermoplastics material and additive to turbulence induced by one or more jets of fluid. The process may be effected in a fluid energy mill using nitrogen or other inert gas as fluid. The components are preferably premixed by tumbling or shaking. The thermoplastics material may be a polymer of an olefin, vinyl acetate, alkyl acrylate or methacrylate, vinyl chloride or tetrafluoroethylene. The additive may be a stabilizer, slip agent, mould release agent, pigments, e.g. carbon black and phthalocyanine blue, and fillers, e.g. talc, clay, chalk, dolomite, bentonite, silica, barytes, glass fibres and bronze powder. The mixtures may be formulated as concentrates which may be blended with further thermoplastics material. Examples describe mixtures of polyethylene with (1 and 2) carbon black, polypropylene with (3) carbon black and (4) phthalocyanine blue, and polytetrafluoroethylene with (5) glass fibres and manganese blue and (6) graphite.
