1307167 Fuel burning devices for generating protective atmospheres VSESOJUZNY NAUCHNO - ISSLEDOVATELSKY INSTITUT ELEKTROTERMICHESKOGO OBOBUDOVANIA 13 July 1971 32728/71 Headings F4B and F4T A fuel mixture burning device whose combustion products are intended for use as a protective atmosphere comprises a casing 1 containing a coolant and enclosing a lined combustion chamber 2 with a fire box 5; a burner 7 projecting through the casing into one end of the fire box and comprising two coaxial pipes 12 and 13 whereof the outer pipe 12 has holes 14 which are regulated by a sleeve valve 15; passages 11 in the combustion chamber lining connecting the holes 14 with pipes 9 disposed along the outer periphery of the chamber 2 and cooled by said coolant; further passages 10 in the lining connecting the other ends of pipes 9 to the fire box to afford a recirculation path for combustion products to the burner via passages 10, pipes 9 and passages 11; and discharge means for the combustion products comprising further cooled pipes 16 leading from the firebox to a catalyst chamber 17 which in turn discharges through an exhaust pipe 6. The discharge end of inner pipe 13 terminates upstream of the corresponding end of pipe 12 thereby creating reduced pressure in passages 11 to initiate the recirculation of combustion products. The catalyst chamber 17 contains a coaxial disc of gas-permeable catalytic material 18 which initiates secondary combustion therein. The combination of recirculation and secondary combustion of combustion products removes noxious admixture from the exhausted atmosphere. The coolant may be water supplied and discharged by pipes 3 and 4.
