Abstract

130,695. Phillips, H. W., and Ford, L. C. March 16, 1918. Framework.- Spars, ribs, &c. for aerial machines are made from sheet metal stamped or bent so as to have a main portion a and two inwardly - turned trough-like portions b, c constituting the head and foot parts of the spar &c. The trough portions may be strengthened by internally - arranged strut members, such as D, by extending one or both flanges of the trough portions so as to overlap, or by connecting the flanges by a metal sheet or sheets so as to form practically a tubular spar. The rigidity of the portion a may be strengthened by embossing therein a number of circular flutes a<2> or a number of straight but angularly-disposed flutes with perforations to reduce the weight of the spar. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 128,262.
