1306909 Seaming non-metallic sheet material PRATT MFG CORP 26 Jan 1972 3565/72 Heading B5K [Also in Division B8] Apparatus for packaging articles 11 with gas flushing includes a former 13 through which separate sealable webs 12 are fed on either side of articles 11, and skip-sealing means 18 which seal the longitudinal edges of the opposed webs while leaving unsealed gas outlets 23 such that an inert or sterilizing gas supplied through nozzles 16 is exhausted through these outlets by soft rollers 25, a second pair of rollers 24 preventing escape of the gas except through the outlets 23. The skip-sealing means may comprise wheels with cut-outs 21, as shown, spring- loaded wheels which are periodically cammed apart, reciprocating sealing jaws, or wheels having serrated peripheries to provide multiple gas outlets. The outlets are sealed, after gas flushing, by wheels 31 with portions 32 corresponding to the outlet positions, and transverse sealing is carried out by bars 27. The webs 12 may be replaced by a single longitudinally-folded web, and may comprise material sealable by heat and pressure, or by pressure alone.
