Abstract

1306559 Selective printing NORTEC COMPUTER DEVICES Inc 1 Sept 1970 [2 Sept 1969] 41737/70 Heading B6F Hammer impression.-In a band, chain, drum or reciprocating bar printer, each hammer 11 is supported by two leaf-springs 13 and is cocked away from the printing position against a permanent magnet 31 by a pivotally mounted bail bar 23. Printing is effected by opposing the permanent magnetic field with an electromagnetic field produced by coils 41 on the polepieces 29, thereby releasing the cocked hammer. A dynamic damper 35 supported by another leafspring 37 is cocked with the hammer. The natural frequency of the damper is lower than that of the hammer, causing the damper to strike the rebounding hammer arm. after printing. The energy in the rebounding hammer is absorbed by the impact of the damper to reduce oscillations in the hammer. The motive power for the pivoted bail 23 is derived from a continuously reciprocating cluteh drive plate 65 which is electromagnetically retained selectively to driven element 61 pivoted to bail drive arm 59.
