1306480 Photo-electric data entry device NATIONAL CASH REGISTER CO 30 July 1971 [6 Aug 1970] 35913/71 Heading G1A [Also in Division G4] A means e. g. a keyboard for producing an electrical signal in response to mechanically entered information comprises columns and rows of elements 12, Fig. 1, movable from a first position to a second, a housing 30 in which are provided columns and rows of chambers 21, Fig. 2, a radiation source means 17, channels 32 from the source 17 to permit the flow of radiation to the chambers, channels 34 connecting the chambers of each column to a group of detectors 19, and radiation deflecting elements 26 attached to respective elements 12 and so arranged that when an element 12 is depressed the deflecting element 26 moves into the radiation path and deflects radiation to at least one detector, the deflecting elements 26 being in the form of beam splitters so that when introduced into or beam path they permit passage of the beam to succeeding chambers in the row. A plurality of beams may be applied to each chamber from the source, and a number of elements 26 may be attached to each key base so that depression into the plurality of beams results in a coded output from a group of detectors on which the deflected beams are incident. The light beam intensity is arranged to be above the saturation level of the detector and "key depressed" and "key released" pulses obtained by differentiation are discriminated against to produce a single uniform pulse in the circuit of an actuated detector.
