Abstract

1306441 Shirring casings UNION CARBIDE CORP 29 April 1970 20687/70 Addition to 1127630 Heading A2B A self-sustaining stick of shirred and compressed flexible tubing having a straight bore, a substantially cylindrical outer surface and an ordered shirred pattern of pleats, has a plurality of spaced apart crests extending along its length, parallel to its longitudinal axis. In the embodiment shown an inflated flexible tubing 20 on mandrel 12 is shirred by shirring wheels 30 and then three crests 23, 23<SP>1</SP>, 23<SP>11</SP> are formed on the tubing 20 by passing it through a restraining passage formed by three spaced apart jaws 50, 50<SP>1</SP> (only two shown). The jaws are actuated by air cylinders 65. The device may comprise two or more than three jaws. The shirring may be done by belts or rolls.
