1306411 Ornamenting R WARSAGER 4 May 1970 [27 March 1970] 21446/70 Heading B6G A mechanism for gripping and driving a hollow object for use with a hot stamping machine comprises a base for attachment to a hot stamping machine, a pair of spaced standards fixed to the base and having axially aligned bores therein, a shaft rigidly mounted at one end in one of the standards and forming an elongate mandrel at its opposite end positioned to extend into a hollow object, a first gripping member rotatably mounted on the shaft coaxially therewith, a second gripping member rotatably and slidably mounted on the other standard in axial alignment with the shaft for movement toward and away from the first gripping member to selectively grip the object therebetween, a second shaft extending through the bore in each of the standards, means for driving the second shaft, and means for transmitting the rotation of the second shaft to the gripping members to rotate each of the gripping members at the same angular velocity. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, platform 19 is constrained to move in a vertical direction only and is moved up and down by the action of air cylinder 17. A transfer tape 27 is fed from reel 26 around guides 28, between the object 25 to be decorated and a die 30 and then between a pair of pull rollers 29. Rollers 29 have a surface which will grip the tape and are rotatably mounted and driven by a motor (not shown) or actuated by hand to advance the tape 28 after the pressing operation. The die 30 is fixed to a carriage 31 freely slidable on guide rails 33 under the influence of an air cylinder 34. Mounted on platform 19 is a base 37. Upright standards 38 having longitudinal bores 39, 39a therein are mounted on base 37. A first shaft 40 extends through the opposed upper longitudinal bores 39 and a second mandrel shaft 41 extends partly through the upper longitudinal bore 39. A lower shaft 42 extends longitudinally through all of the upright standards 38. A cup-like gripping member 43 is secured to the shaft 40 and a second cup-like gripping member 44 is secured to a gear member 57. Fixed to the end of shaft 41 is a mandrel 47 pivotally attached to shaft 41 through pivot pin 48. A roller 49 is rotatably mounted on the mandrel 47 and serves to rotatably support object 25. A drive rack gear 50 is pivotally connected to carriage 31 and engages the gear 51. The gear 51 has the same pitch diameter as the diameter of the object 25. The gear 51 is fixed to a gear 52 rotatably mounted on a stationary shaft 54 welded to upright standard 38. When gear 52 is rotated it rotates gear 55 which is fixed on to shaft 42 and gear 56 also fixed to shaft 42. Gear 55 meshes with gear 57 rotatably journalled on shaft 41 and connected to gripping member 44. Gear 56 engages gear 59 fixed to shaft 40. Thus as the carriage 31 moves to the right as shown in Fig. 1, the cup-like gripping members are both simultaneously rotated in the same direction. Bottle 25 to be decorated has its mouth end 25a inserted into gripping member 44 and the bottom portion inserted into gripping member 43. The gripping members 43 and 44 are forced into tight engagement with the respective ends of the bottle 25 by the action of air cylinder 60.
