Abstract

1306337 Descaling sheet metal BATTELLE MEMORIAL INSTITUTE 8 July 1971 [8 July 1970] 32028/71 Headings C7B and C7E [Also in Divisions B3 and G3] A metal, e.g. stainless steel, sheet is descaled by passing it between electro-sparking electrodes 11, and then through a chemical or electro-chemical bath 5 of e. g. HCl or HNO 3 . The thickness of the oxide layer, after the electro-sparking is measured by an electrode 20 connected to a current source 22 through a resistor 21 the output from which is fed to a comparator circuit 25, connected to the control terminal 15 of the pulse generator 14 to adjust the frequency of the electro-spark. In a modification Fig. 6 (not shown) hollow sparking elements are used, and compressed air or reducing gas is fed to the bore of the elements, to cool the elements and remove particles of scale. Several sparking devices and baths may be provided.
