1306323 Stretchable bonded fabrics MONSANTO CO 19 April 1971 [2 Feb 1970] 20709/ 71 Heading D1R A nonwoven web of continuous non elastomeric filaments, partially autogenously bonded at their crossover points, so as to permit a degree of filament rotation about the bond, is stretched along a given direction so as to straighten and align filaments in that direction whilst buckling filaments in transverse directions and the bonding completed whilst the web is under tension. The fabric is thereby made stretchable up to an extension of 32% in the direction perpendicular to the applied stretch, since the buckled filaments straighten under slight tension. In examples 2-4 extruded nylon 66 filaments or ribbons 11 were stretched by aspirator 12 and deposited on foraminous belt 14 by means of vacuum source 18. The web 17 is treated with hydrogen chloride or other gas in box 29 to break hydrogen bonds and drawn 1.5 times or 1.1 times between pressure rollers 30, 31 one or both of which may be heated to produce partial bonding and pulleys 36, 37, which have a greater peripheral speed. Heater or water bath 34 desorbs the gas, so that intra-fibre hydrogen bonding occurs. In example 5 the web 17 comprised a mixture of nylon 6 and nylon 6.6 filaments and gas box 29 was replaced by an oven at 200‹C, which softened the nylon 6 filaments. The web was drawn 1.5 times and cooled by forced air after exiting from heater 34. In example 6 spunbonded webs of trilobal crimped or uncrimped continuous polyester filaments, were stretched 1.8 times whilst in a 210‹C oven, then rapidly cooled. In example 7 a spunbonded fabric of filaments having a nylon 66 core and a nylon 6 sheath which has been melted to act as a binder is drawn 1.2 times in a 175‹C.
