1306160 Making combustible gas; reforming naphtha UNIVERSAL OIL PRODUCTS CO 6 July 1970 32618/70 Heading C5E A method for converting hydrocarbons 10, e.g. naphthas boiling in the range 32‹ to 232‹ C., to produce H 2 at 26, gaseous hydrocarbons at 35, and light liquid hydrocarbons at 30, 34, comprises reforming the feed at 11 at relatively low pressure, i.e. in the range 50 to 1200 p.s.i.g.; separating the effluent at 14 into a first liquid phase 16 and a first H 2 -containing phase 15; increasing the pressure of both phases to a relatively high value (which is preferably at least 50 p.s.i. more than the low pressure), and recombining the phases. An H 2 -containing stream 22 is separated at 21, a portion 12 being recycled, and the remainder being cooled at 24 and a condensate 27 separated at 25 for recombining with the liquid 23 from the separator 21. This liquid is fractionated, condensed and separated to provide the required fractions. The stage 11 uses a fixed bed Pt catalyst, and is preferably operated at pressures in the range 85 to 200 p.s.i.g.
