1305924 Retreading tyres H TIES 19 March 1970 [19 March 1969] 13421/70 Heading B7C A machine for handling tyres, during for example retreading, (the right hand half being shown in Fig. 1) comprises a pair of rim plates 2 each mounted on a respective rotatable shaft 5, which shaft can be moved longitudinally towards or away from each other, the awayward movement being limited by the end surface 9 of each shaft abutting a spacer member 6 whose position is adjustable in the direction of the shafts. The spacer member is screwable axially into a holder 7 to provide the adjustment of the abutting position, the spacer and holder being located at one end of a cranked lever 11 which can pivot about its apex under the action of a piston and cylinder unit so that the spacer member 6 can be swung out of the path of the shaft 5 and allow the rims to be separated beyond the limit set by the abutment when it is desired to position a tyre between the rim plates 2. Eaoh shaft 5 is slidably housed in a respective casing 32 which have their orientation adjustable for alignment with each other and the machine frame by means of bearings 30, 31. Longitudinal movement of the shafts is effected by a cylinder 43 with a piston and a rod 45 which is freely attached to a frame plate 19. After a tubeless tyre has been positioned the rim plate shafts are moved towards each other to engage the tyre beads and the spacer members are returned to their operating position where they limit outward travel of the shafts: air is supplied to the tyre via a pipe 3 and the pressure in the tyre acts on the rim plates to move them apart until the end surfaces 9 abut the head 6b of the spacer member. The adjustment of the spacer member enables tyres of different axial widths to be accommodated and the head 6b may be aligned with a scale (28) graduated according to tyre sizes. The member 6 can be locked in a chosen position by a sprung pawl (24).
