Abstract
968,319. Testing vehicle tyres. FABRIK FUR FIRESTONE PRODUKTE A.G. Aug. 19, 1963 [July 30, 1963], No. 32750/63. Heading B7C. A sample tyre 1 (Fig. 1) is rotated while being urged into contact with a plurality of rotatable rollers 5, which simulate a road surface. The tyre may be rotated directly by axle 3, or by rotating the rollers or by a driving member contacting the periphery 4. The rollers may be fixed with their axes in one plane, or rollers may be staggered (Fig. 3, not shown), or some rollers may oscillate (Fig. 4) by means of hydraulic or pneumatic rams (Fig. 7). Rollers may be of uniform cylindrical form and less than one fifth the diameter of tyre 1, or some rollers may be non-cylindrical (Figs. 5, 6, not shown). Rollers may be hollow (Fig. 2, not shown) for passage of heating or cooling fluids. Rollers may have rough or ribbed surfaces, and may be driven or braked to turn at different speeds from the tyre 1, to simulate acceleration and retardation. Either axle 3 or rollers 5 may be movable to urge the tyre on to the rollers, the force being measured. Some rollers may be tilted relative to the others (Fig. 7), to simulate cornering, or the axle 3 may be tilted.
