Abstract

1305383 Supporting deflected pneumatic tyres N J GILLETT 17 June 1970 [20 March 1969] 14571/69 Heading B7C A tubeless tyre 12 has an annular spring 13 disposed within its cavity 16 coaxial with the rotational axis, at least the radially outmost part of the spring being covered with a rubber or plastics material such that the radially outermost part of the material does not contact the tyre when the latter is inflated. The spring, intended to act as an emergency running support on deflation, may be of circular or square cross-section formed by bending and joining together the ends of a straight helical wire spring by a clip (8) or brazing, and is positioned in the tyre such that it bears against the tyre beads 15 and retains them seated on the wheel rim 11. The spring may be coated with a plastics sheath or its radially outermost parts may have a covering 18 of plastics which may be continuous or be split between adjacent convolutions of the spring to form a plurality of shoulders 19. The cross-sectional diameter of the spring is about 0À7 the internal diameter of the cross-section of the tyre cavity 16, and the wire diameter between 3/16 and 5/16 inch.
