Abstract

1305367 Vinyl acetate SOC ITALIANA RESINE SpA 8 June 1971 [1 July 1970] 19526/71 Heading C2C In a method of separating vinyl acetate from mixtures with ethyl acetate the liquid mixture is supplied to a distillation column part way between the head and base and extractive liquid acetic acid is supplied part way between the liquid mixture introduction and the head, and the distillation is carried out with a ratio by weight of acetic acid to vinyl acetate of 5:1 to 20:1 and with a reflux ratio of 2 to 7:1, and the vinyl acetate is recovered at the top and acetic acid and ethyl acetate at the base. A column of between 15 to 50 theoretical trays may be used and the mixture introduced at between the fifth and thirtieth tray, and the acetic acid between the tenth and fortieth tray. The mixture treated may be that prepared by the oxidation of ethylene in acetic acid using palladium or other rare metals as catalyst.
