Abstract
1305336 Extruding PTFE tubes E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 16 Aug 1971 [17 Aug 1970] 38331/71 Heading B5A [Also in Division F4] A process for producing small diameter heat exchange tubes by extrusion comprises (a) dry mixing pellets of a polyfluorinated plastic and particles of graphite having a diameter >2 microns to form a mixture comprising 5 to 45% by wt. of graphite particles (b) passing the dry mixture into a high energy, low temperature mechanical mixing region for mechanical milling (c) forcing the mixture into a melting region where the bulk temperature of the mixture is maintained at a temperature <50 F. above the melt point of the plastic and (d) extruding the melt mixture into hollow tubes in which the ratio of the diameter of the graphite particles to the wall thickness of the tubes is between 0À001 and 0À5. Preferably the polyfluorinated plastic consists of a polymer of tetrafluoroethylene or a copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and hexafluoropropylene. The mechanical mixing region is formed between two co-rotating screws having varying cross-sections which divide the mechanical mixing region into a plurality of mixing zones to impart varying degrees of energy to the mixing process.
