Abstract

1305211 Linear polyterephthalates MONSANTO CO 5 Jan 1970 [7 Jan 1969 13 May 1969] 468/70 Heading C3R A thermally stable, disperse dyeable, synthetic linear condensation polyester comprises at least 85% by wt. of the polyester of terephthalic acid and a glycol, modified with from 0À25-3À0 mole per cent based on the moles of the repeating units of the polyester, of an additive comprising compounds of the formula R-O(G-O) x -H, where R is a C 8-20 alkyl group, G is an ethylene, propylene or butylene radical or a mixture thereof, and X is 8-20 and is # number of carbon atoms in R. The polyester may be further modified with up to 0À73 mole per cent, based on the amount of dicarboxylic acid or ester-forming derivative thereof, of a chain-branching agent which is preferably a tri- or tetra-fanctional aromatic carboxylic acid derivative, e.g. trimesic acid, trimethyl trimerate, tetramethylpyromellitate, or a polyol, e.g. R(OH) n (R=C 3-6 , n=3-6), R 1 -(CH 2 OH) 3 (R 1 =C 2-6 ) or C 6 H 3 [(CH 2 ) n OH] 3 (n = 1-6). The polyester is preferably prepared by polycondensing terephthalic acid or esterforming derivative, a glycol, and from 0À25- 3À0 mole/per cent, based on the weight of acid or ester-forming derivative of mixtures of alkoxy poly-(oxyalkylene) glycols RO(GO) x H. Preferred glycols for esterification are HO(CH 2 ) n OH (n=2-10) particularly ethylene glycol, and acids that may be present in addition to terephthalic acid include isophthalic acid, p,p<SP>1</SP> - dicarboxybiphenyl, p,p<SP>1</SP> - dicarboxydiphenylsulphone, p,p<SP>1</SP> - dicarboxydiphenylmethane, and halides, esters, half-esters, ammonium and amine salts thereof. The polyesters may be melt-spun to form filaments or films, and the invention further comprises filaments characterized by having (a) the inherent capability of resisting fusion when heated in the presence of air to at least 175‹ C. for at least 10 min, and (b) an inherent disperse dye uptake of at least 2% when dyed with Latyl Brilliant Blue 2G dye (C.I. Disperse Blue 61) for 2 hr. at 98À89‹ C. with a 4% dye bath having a liquor-filament ratio of 40:1; percentages being based on the wt. of filament. Specification 847,090 is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 847,090.
