Abstract
1305019 Road signals for controlling traffic EMI Ltd 5 May 1970 [23 May 1969] 26331/69 Heading G4Q In the traffic control system disclosed in Specification 1,251,188 for facilitating merging of vehicles in a side road on to a main road in which groups of lamps on the main road are sequentially changed from green to amber in response to actuation of respective detectors in the side road whereby the driver of a vehicle on the main road is warned in advance of the merging point that a vehicle is proceeding along the side road towards that point, the detectors and lamps are so spaced that initially the sequential changing of the lamps to amber gives the impression of a fast moving vehicle on the side road and subsequently gives the impression that the vehicle in the side road is decelerating. Thus, a vehicle on the main road, which is driven to follow the moving wave of amber lamps will not need to suddenly decelerate at the merge point to permit the side road vehicle to join the main road. Prior to the merge point the amber lights are replaced by red lights to give additional warning to the driver of the main road vehicle.
