Abstract
1304961 Xylenes TORAY INDUSTRIES Inc 12 Feb 1970 [12 Feb 1969 Aug 21 1969] 6896/70 Heading C5E Xylenes are prepared by disproportionating, in the vapour phase and in the presence of a solid catalyst providing acid reaction sites, a mixture of toluene and a mononuclear alkyl benzene having at least 9 carbon atoms, in which mixture the ratio of total alkyl carbon atoms to total benzene nuclei is between 1À01 : 1 and 2À4 : 1, in the presence of a gas containing 0À1-25 moles H2/mole of said mixture and having an H 2 concentration of not less than 70%, the reaction temperature being 300- 600‹ C., and the reaction pressure being maintained substantially constant in the range 1-45 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> for at least 10 hours from the initiation of the reaction and then being increased by at least 1 kg./cm<SP>2</SP>. to a pressure not exceeding 100 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> In the example a mixture of toluene with mixed trimethyl benzenes is disproportionated, the catalyst being silver mordenite.
