Abstract

1304547 Photoelectric speed measurement SHELL INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ NV 13 April 1970 17510/70 Heading H4D The speed of a moving surface is measured by splitting a beam of monochromatic plane polarized light into two beams, which are caused to overlap on the surface and detecting the rate of variation of the intensity of the light reflect from the surface. In a ship's log, a beam of light from an argon laser 1 is split into two parallel beams 3, 4 and these are refracted by lens 6 mounted in the hull 7, to intersect at the focus 8 in the sea water. The output of a photomultiplier 12 is connected to a frequency analyser 13, e.g. oscilloscope or computer. Mask 11 is provided at the focus of lens 10 to shield the detector from stray light. The mask 11 is positioned by inserting a bi-prism (14) into beam 3 between lenses 6 and 10. This produces a beam parallel to beam 3 near the axis of lens 10 and directed in the opposite direction. The aperture in mask 11 is then positioned to allow the beam refracted through lens 10 to pass through. (Fig. 3, not shown). The output of the analyser 13 may be connected to a computer which averages the Doppler frequency over a period of time, e.g. 15 minutes, to reduce the effects of turbulence. The system may also be applied to measuring the velocity of material, e.g. metal strip, fabric, plastic during manufacture. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,249,540.
