Abstract
1304518 Anode assemblies IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 18 May 1970 [27 June 1969] 32544/69 Heading C7B An anode assembly for a mercury cathode cell for electrolyzing alkali metal chloride solution comprises a Ti tube 2 closed across its lower end in fluid-tight manner e.g. by welds 3 with an inverted Ti channel shape 1, which electrically connects e.g. by welds 6 to a parallel foraminate Ti structure 7 carrying on at least part of its surface a coating (not shown) comprising an operative electrode material, and an Al current lead-in rod 4 coaxially and at least partially within the tube 2, friction-welded at its end 5 to the shape 1. The structure 7 may be a sheet of expanded Ti metal, or built up from spaced apart parallel strips, Fig.3 (not shown), rods or hemicylindrical or U-shaped channels each welded at one long edge to the edges of the shape 1, or a louvred structure formed by pressing out a series of louvre slats from a Ti sheet, the slats being turned at right angles to the plane of the sheet or having their edges rolled round to form hemicylindrical members alternating with the pressed out slots. Openings for escape of gas may be provided in the laterally extending parts of the shape 1, Figs.5 and 6 (not shown). The operative electrode material may consist of at least one Pt group metal (i.e. Pt, Rh, Ir, Ru, Os and Pd) and/or oxides thereof, or Re, ReO 3 , magnetite, Ti nitride, a Pt group metal boride, phosphide or silicide, or an oxidic semiconducting compound; the coating may also contain an oxide of a film-forming metal such as TiO 2 when the operative electrode material is a Pt group metal oxide e.g. RuO 2 .
