Abstract

1304177 Gas turbine combustion chambers JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd 1 July 1970 [23 April 1969] 20666/69 Heading F1L A flame tube for a gas turbine engine comprises tubes 10, 11 secured together by bolts 13 passing through lugs 12 and collars 14, the latter maintaining an axial gap 22 between the tubes. A sleeve 25 defines an annular space 26 around tubes 10, 11 and is located at one end by brackets 27, 28 and at the other end by engagement with brackets 20 which secure the flame tube to a cover plate 29. A frusto-conical baffle 15 is supported within tube 10 by mountings 16 each comprising a radially extending tube 18 secured to baffle 15 and slidably engaging a boss 19 secured to tube 10. In operation air flows past brackets 27, 28 to enter space 26. A proportion of this air passes through passages 21 between brackets 20 to inlet 8 and is directed by baffle 15 through gap 17 and against the interior surface of tube 10 before being directed by a further baffle 23 towards the centre of the tube to form a toroidal flow pattern into which fuel is injected by a nozzle 30. The inward air-flow is reinforced by air entering through passage 22. Dilution air enters tube 11 through holes 24, the diluted combustion gases leaving the tube through outlet 9. In modifications, the edges of baffles 15, 23 and the adjacent ends of tubes 10, 11 may be formed with castellations to divide the air-flow into a number of angularly spaced streams.
