1304038 Butadiene-alphaolefin alternating copolymerization catalyst MARUZEN PETROCHEMICAL CO Ltd 24 April 1970 [25 April 1969 13 May 1969 19 June 1969 3 July 1969 15 Aug 1969 10 Sept 1969 25 Sept 1969 30 Sept 1969 (2) 9 Oct 1969 31 Oct 1969 (2) 4 Dec 1969 17 March 1970] 19705/70 Heading C3P Butadiene and a C 3-6 alpha-olefin or styrene are copolymerized, to form an alternating copolymer, in the presence of a catalyst comprizing (a) an organoaluminium compound, (b) a compound containing a V-halogen bond, (c) a compound containing a MO hydrocarbyl or MO haloether linkage, where M is an atom whose electronegativity is lower than 2À2, and optionally (a) a halogen, halide, or metal or metalloid oxide. Conventional Zeigler alternating copolymerization techniques are employed. In examples, the olefin is propylene, styrene, butene-1, pentene-1, 4-methyl pentene-1 or hexene-1, while the catalyst components are (a) Al(iBu) 3 , AlEt 3 , or AlEt 2 Cl; (b) VOCl 3 or VOCl 4 ; (c) Al(OiPr) 3 , AlCl(OiPr) 2 , NaOEt, B(OPn) 3 , Ti(OBu) 4 , P(OPh) 3 , AlCl 3 -propylene oxide reaction product, Al(iOPr) 3 -H 2 O, AlEt 3 -iPrOH or EtOH-H 2 O, Ti(OiPr) 4 -H 2 O, B(OEt) 3 -H 2 O, P(OnBu) 3 -H 2 O, OV(OEt) 3 -H 2 O, Al 2 O(CH 3 COO) 4 -OV(CH 3 COO) 2 -, Zn(CH 3 COO) 2 -Zr(CH 3 COO) 4 -, Mn(CH 3 COO) 2 -, Pb(CH 3 COO) 2 - Al(OiPr) 3 , Cd(CH 3 COO) 2 -P(OPh) 3 , OV(CH 3 COO) 2 -Si(OEt) 4 , Ti(OBu) 4 -Cu(CH 3 COO) 2 , (CaOOC.CH 3 ) 2 -Ti(OBu) 4 , Co(CH 3 .COO) 2 -B(OPh) 3 or Al(O-s-Bu) 3 , NaOEt; and (d) TiCl 4 , SnCl 4 , +BuCl, AlCl(iOPr) 2 , I 2 , AlCl 3 , CuCl, ZnCl 2 , MgCl 2 , SbCl 5 , MnCl 2 , PCl 5 , AlEtCl 2 , MgO, ZnO, Al 2 O 3 , silicaalumina, B 2 O 3 , TiO 2 , zeolites, V 2 O 5 , CoBr 2 , ZnI 2 , BF 3 .OEt 2 , or AlCl 3 .Et 2 O.
