Abstract

130,398. Hildt, E. V. March 27, 1917. Projectiles; ammunition, packing.-Consists in providing in an incendiary dart or the like a vessel containing a spontaneously inflammable liquid, such as zinc ethyl, the receptacle being adapted to be broken, preferably by a percussion device, when impact occurs. In the construction shown, a glass tube z filled with zinc ethyl is fixed, for example by paraffin, in a tube 1, which has a tail 2 and a helical end piece 3. The tube 1 is supported by a spring 4 in a tube a, so that, on impact, it can slide forward and cause the glass tube z to be broken against a striker g. A small quantity of mercury 6 is provided in the tube z to facilitate breaking. A suitable safety device may be provided, or the striker may be removable. Before use, the darts may be wrapped in fireproof canvas, to which parallel strips of corrugated cardboard are sewn. A method of filling the glass tubes with zinc ethyl in an atmosphere of carbon dioxide is described.
